Beware of Jury Duty Scam

January 12, 2016

The Clyde Hill Police Department has become aware of a telephone scam affecting the Eastside area, including Clyde Hill and Yarrow Point.

The callers claim to be from The United States Federal Marshal’s Office, or some variant thereof.  They claim that the resident, or a member of their family, has failed to appear for (federal) jury duty and if they don’t immediately pay a fine that police will come and arrest them.  They provide high level of detail about themselves and about the Seattle area in an attempt to sound legitimate.

Courts and Law Enforcement Agencies do not contact people over the phone to collect fines, threaten them with arrest, or ask for personal information such as social security numbers or birthdates.  Do not provide personal information over the phone and be very suspicious of anyone who calls and asks for money to avoid arrest.

To verify if you have been summoned for jury duty, contact the Clerk of the proper Court.  To report a scam phone call, you may submit an online complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
